Bodhi School Programme

Beginnings

Discussions with the guests and Barberyn Management took place after the Tsunami. Some guests supported the idea of helping the schools in the area. The rationale was that a bright and comfortable school environment would provide a happy place for kids who have been affected by disaster and tragedy. Although not all the guests thought that that was the priority at that time, there was consensus that this was an important aspect of rehabilitation and renewal of hope, and should be pursued further.

Guests at Barberyn Beach formed a team to visit Mahanama Kanishta Vidyalaya in Gurubabila, one of the schools adjacent to the resort and drew some preliminary plans. This school has since been used for a temporary shelter for the homeless.

During this time, our guests suggested a name for the project "The Bodhi Programme". This name has been adopted.

Barberyn started discussing with the Central Government and the Provincial Government authorities and the Education Department on the best way to go about the school help project, which is close to the hearts of many of us. We also asked the authorities for recommendations on which schools to assist.

Several "Friends of Barberyn" have contributed funds and stated their preference that the funds be used for the school related projects. The work on the school projects has commenced with these contributions. The rest of the funds for the main work will come from Fiends of Barberyn who have collected funds specifically for the Bodhi Programme.
